Wheat Festival is a celebration of community

 The 123rd annual Wheat Festival in Wellington, KS, will feature something for every summer funseeker.

Taking place July 11-15 in downtown Wellington, the festival is jam-packed with family-friendly activities, including an art exhibit, art contest, children’s storytime and crafts, movie-themed sidewalk chalking, watermelon feed, horseshoe tournament, carnival rides, lip sync contest, hot dog eating contest, cookie jar auction, cow chip throw, and bed races.

According to the state’s tourism website, the event has been a tradition in the state since 1900, when Sumner County celebrated a bumper wheat harvest that earned Wellington the title of “Wheat Capital of the World.” The festival remains a celebration of community and agriculture.

National Summer Arms Show to feature firearms, historical pieces

 

Now in its 52nd year, the National Summer Arms Show, returns July 29-30 to the KCI Expo Center in Kansas City, MO.
Sponsored by the Missouri Valley Arms Collectors Association, a National Rifle Association affiliate, the show will feature a variety of both modern and historical firearms on display and available for purchase. Tables are still available for vendors; to reserve one, call 816-873-1951.

A celebration of the nation’s Mother Road will bring thousands through Oklahoma this summer during the Route 66 Festival. 

The annual festival will take place in downtown Vinita on June 16-17. A centerpiece of the Route 66 Festival, a car show featuring classic automobiles, trucks, and motorcycles will take place, and the car show is sponsored by the Craig County Cruisers, a local organization of classic car enthusiasts.  

A block party on Friday night gathers friends old and new together, with food trucks, children’s activities, and rockin’ music on site to feed all your senses. A carnival with rides and games also will be on site during the weekend, as well as food vendors and arts and crafts vendors. 

If full-sized cars aren’t your thing, try a smaller version with a remote-controlled car. The Steam Alley races will be available for remote-controlled car racers of all ages and skill levels.

The 19th annual Springfield Antiques Show and Sale, scheduled for June 2-4 at Orr Building on the State Fairgrounds, will feature more than 50 quality displays from across the country. 

The long-running show will include expert chipped and damaged crystal repair on site; in addition, repair services will be made available for silver, costume jewelry, bead stringing, furniture repair and chair caning. 

Admission to the show is $8 per person, with the gates open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. June 2 and 3, and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. June 4.

Quilt festival comes to KC this month

 

If you’re hooked on quilting, be sure to stop by the annual Kansas City Regional Quilt Festival, June 15-17 at the Overland Park Convention Center in Overland Park.

As in previous years, the festival includes special exhibits, demos, judged quilts on display, and, of course, plenty of classes to help you improve your craft. New classes this year include Machine-Stitched Kawandi-Style Quilts, Stitch Play for Bag Ladies, French Double-Fold Binding Entirely by Machine #4, and Tips and Tricks from a Professional Longarm Quilter. Registration is required for classes, and fees vary according to class.

Missouri’s largest downtown square will be the destination for a fun-filled Fourth of July when Olde Glory Days returns to Clinton.
The celebration, slated for June 27-July 2, has taken place in Clinton since 1994. A display of pomp and pageantry, the event promises to feature plenty of family fun.

The festivities kick off with a dinner for veterans June 27 at the Elks Lodge; most of the events take place on June 30 and July 1, with live music throughout the day, children’s activities, a carnival complete with rides, and drawings for money and prizes. A parade will weave its way through the downtown area on July 1, too.

Olde Glory Days wraps up with an ice cream social and Gospelfest – a celebration of faith and community through gospel music – on July 2. That evening, celebrate the arrival of July with a bang at a free fireworks show, which begins at 9:30 p.m.

The 65th annual Brownville Flea Market and Craft Show brings deals to town later this month, May 27-29 at Main Street and Depot in Brownville. The show takes place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is sponsored by the Brownville Historical Society.

The show will feature food vendors in addition to the more than 300 vendors on site selling everything from handmade items to antiques. Attendees can park along Highway 36 in town.
